2020 - Hobbs: Salt

New Mexico Arts and the Hobbs Local Selection Committee present T.I.M.E. NOW 2020 – Temporary Installations Made for the Environment in Hobbs, NM. New Mexico artists were asked to propose artworks inspired by the local culture and history of the area, while incorporating a strong community engagement component that provides enrichment for the host community. The Lea County Center for the Arts is this year’s host for the artwork.

Hobbs Local Selection Committee selected the Kason Group artist team.

Artwork inspired by the elements of our natural world. The concept of the sculpture intends to address a necessary aspect of the local Ranching Heritage on both a Macro & Micronutrient scale. The installation highlights the life-sustaining essential elements and trace minerals for successful animal husbandry. More specifically, the installation focuses on the role that ‘Salt’ plays as an instrumental dietary nutrient, in our Ranching & Agricultural communities. For cattle, horses, and other livestock in Southern New Mexico, the salt lick is essential for proper dietary animal health (particularly in harsh weather environments). Installation includes nearly 60 individual compressed salt lick blocks. Following the exhibition, salt lick blocks will be donated to the local 4H in the spirit of “Hobbspitality”.

Due to several COVID related delays, installation and temporary exhibition was delayed several months.
