is speaking on another's behalf and promoting their best interest. Lobbying is
when you ask someone to do something for you. If you are confused about the difference,

How
to Justify Increased Arts Funding? Use These New Figures on Economic Impact of
the Arts in New Mexico.
As
the nation's and State's economic climate are increasingly compromised, the arts
field continues to experience decreased funding. A strong justification for stable
or increased arts funding must be bolstered by economic justifications for the
arts' value. The results of five studies will assist arts organizations in advocating
for and pursuing arts funding. These include two statewide studies, recommendations
from Santa Fe's strategic planning process, a Santa Fe County study, and a national
study of arts' economic impact.
WESTAF's
(Western States Arts Federation) study, "New Mexico Arts: Nurturing the State's
Economy", combines 2003 and 2004 results
from organizations eligible for application for New Mexico Arts funding. The study
shows that New Mexico's estimated 200 nonprofit arts organizations directly spend
more than $63 million in the New Mexico economy, employ 852 full-time and 1,484
part-time persons, underwrite more than 2,500 part-time contracted positions,
and attract more than $6 million in contributed goods and services.

Santa
Fe's strategic planning process, conducted by Angelou Economics, was completed
in April 2004. A community assessment of the strengths and challenges the city
faces in relation to its economic development identified seven business sectors
upon which to focus. Three directly relate to the arts: arts and culture, design,
and publishing and new media ("Target Industry Report"). Final recommendations
from the process are in "Cultivating Santa Fe's Future Economy: Economic Development
Strategy - April 2004". http://www.cultivatesantafe.com/Research_and_Reports/research_and_reports.html
The
University of New Mexico's Bureau of Business and Economic Research study, "The
Economic Importance of the Arts & Cultural Industries in Santa Fe County",
includes an executive summary, quantitative and qualitative analysis, and a Powerpoint
presentation. It shows that in 2002, Santa Fe's arts and cultural industries and
cultural tourism generated over $1 billion in receipts, employed 12,567, and paid
$231.5 million in wages and salaries. http://www.unm.edu/~bber/pubs/pubs-sip3.htm#yr04
Americans
for the Arts, a national arts advocacy association, in 2002 published a comprehensive
economic impact study of the nonprofit arts industry. Arts & Economic Prosperity:
The Economic Impact of Nonprofit Arts Organizations and Their Audiences reveals
that America's nonprofit arts industry generates $134 billion in economic activity
every year. This activity generates 4.85 million full-time equivalent jobs, $89.4
billion in household income and $24.4 billion in federal, state and local tax
revenues. The study was based on surveys of 3,000 nonprofit arts organizations
and more than 40,000 attendees at arts events in 91 cities in 33 states, plus
the District of Columbia.

The Department of Cultural Affairs study, "On Fertile Ground: New Mexico Counts
on Culture", documents the economic and social impacts of cultural activities
throughout New Mexico. Including economic data as well as selected case studies,
the study shows that cultural activities in New Mexico generated more than $2.5
billion in direct economic impact in 2003, employed 32,347 and paid $528 million
in payroll. http://www.nmoca.com/fertileground.pdf
