Budget: $170,900

The mission of the College of Education at New Mexico State University is to serve the people of New Mexico through education, research, extension education, and public service with specific emphasis on innovative practices, overcoming barriers to learning, international activities, technology, and literacy for the diverse populations of New Mexico, surrounding states and border communities. The College’s motto is “Transforming Lives.”

The Local Selection Committee at New Mexico State University is interested in commissioning artwork that provides a response to the architecture of the building, enhances livability of the space and conceptually articulates the purpose of the college, which is to collaboratively develop educational practitioners and leaders to work effectively in a diverse society.

Tim Prentice from West Cornwall, CT was selected to create the artwork.

Tim Prentice’s Sails will be an installation of suspended kinetic sculptures that will take advantage of the natural light and air currents in the atrium of O’Donnell Hall to produce a play of movement and light within the space. The sculptures, to be constructed of aluminum and stainless steel, will be suspended on a series of swivels and will move freely. The artwork will be visible at all levels of the atrium and will decrease in size as they move up in the space. There will be a total of six triangular sails; two at 40” x 84”, two at 36” x 72” and two at 30” x 60”.
